PACIFIC NORTHWEST FLY TYERS POSTER

Fly Fishing Arts and Conservation Society invites 40+ tyers to demonstrate the artistry of fly tying and showcase fly fishing equipment to general public every year. The event is to strengthen the fly fishing community in the northwest region and increase an awareness of conservation. The organization asked to design a poster to promote the event.

OVERVIEW

The project demonstrates my competency in crafting poster design to advertise and communicate the event information in a way that’s easy-to-understand and digestible. It also displays my ability to meet tight deadline, two weeks.

PROBLEM

To entice people who may be interested in fly fishing to join the event and foster the fly fishing community in the northwest region, I was asked to design a poster that’s easy-to-understand, compelling, visually intriguing, and engaging.

ACTION

Visualize ideas

With quick turnaround, I have skipped sketching and explored ideas with high-fidelity mockups. To catch people’s attention, the large fly was positioned front and center. Two variations were created. However, the design didn’t meet the goal of conveying the message in easy-to-understand digestible manner.

Improve and implement

After realizing that this particular poster is copy heavy, gradient was kept minimal and color contrast between the text and background was increased, boosting the readability. By making the logo prominent, the visual focus was improved. A small area of vibrant gradient elevated the visual appeal and intrigued an audience.

RESULTS

The poster successfully enticed fly fishing amateurs and professionals to the event. The client was pleased to see a large crowd of people at the venue and receive minimal calls for more information or clarifying the messages on the poster.
