ME AND THE JAPANESE BEAUTY STANDARDS

As a woman, we all have body image issues. The book offers a professional wisdom through an autobiography. Through struggles and failures, the author finally accepts who she is and embraces her uniqueness and strength. I was given an opportunity to create a book cover that visually told her story.

OVERVIEW

The project showcases my proficiency in constructing visual design that speaks to and evokes audience emotions through the layout, typography, colors, and visual hierarchy.

PROBLEM

The author had a brilliant idea to share her own life story and provide wisdoms to overcome life’s problems and complex body image issues. To fulfill her wish to help others, a book cover that entices and appeals to audience was needed.

ACTION

Visualize ideas

The author visualized the cover that expressed her suffering and agony with her body image that led her to have low self-esteem. At the same time, the cover needed to illustrate her strength and optimism that helped her overcome and accept her individuality. Rapid sketches to visualize her concept and idea generations were conducted.

Improve and implement

From three ideas presented to her, she chose the most bold color concept with a woman silhouette positioned upside down with the distorted reflection almost hovering and haunting the figure. It was the perfect idea that depicted her complex experience she went through. I worked with her to improve and fine-tune the layout, color, texture, typography, and copy.

RESULTS

The final cover was well received and able to capture her target audience’s heart; sold many of her physical copies as well as e-books. The author was pleased with the result and confident in presenting her books to her readers.
